Dry Eye Disease is a common ailment and affects over 77 million patients. Its most frequent symptoms include blurriness, red or burning vision, a gritty feeling in the eyes, unusual tear production, light sensitivity and contact lens discomfort.

Causes
Dry Eye is most commonly found in women over 35, and is often the result of hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause and autoimmune diseases like arthritis and lupus. But it can also be caused by medical conditions such as diabetes and blocked tear ducts, and by certain medications. Unfortunately, contact wearers are also affected by Dry Eye Disease and environmental factors, such as smoking and prolonged computer use, can also play a role.
Diagnosis
While the causes are many, the diagnosis is simple. We can detect Dry Eye Disease through a simple eye exam or a dye test. The Schirmer Test, which measures tear volume in the eye, can also be used.
Treatment
Heading off the damaging affects of Dry Eye is easily achieved. We commonly use artificial tears and gels. And for more severe cases, we’ll place a slow-release insert, filled with medicine, under the lower lid that gradually releases moisture for much needed relief. Or an ointment at bedtime may be required.
